Mommy Makeover Surgery

Although childbirth and raising a family are one of the greatest joys a woman can experience, there can be a significant physical toll associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

A Mommy Makeover refers to combining several cosmetic procedures to help return a woman to her pre-pregnancy appearance (or even better). This can include surgical and non-surgical procedures.

The most common Mommy Makeover combinations include:

  • Breast Lift (mastopexy) with Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Augmentation with a Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) and Liposuction to the abdomen/flanks/hips
  • Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) with Liposuction to the abdomen/flanks/hips
  • Thigh Lift with Liposuction to the abdomen/flanks/hips
  • Botox and Dermal Fillers to the face including Lip Augmentation
  • Hand Rejuvenation with fat grafting and Liposuction to the abdomen/flanks/hips

Whatever your aesthetic goals are, Dr. Pirani is more than happy to help you get your body back to where it was before pregnancy.

Mommy Makeover: Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Pirani is happy to help moms return to their pre-pregnancy bodies, but first, you might have some questions.

Mommy Makeover Procedures

Mommy Makeover is a combination of several cosmetic procedures to help return a woman to her pre-pregnancy appearance or improve upon it. Pregnancy, childbirth, and even breastfeeding can take a toll on the female body, altering its shape in a variety of ways.

Ideal candidates for a Mommy Makeover will be done breastfeeding and will be done having children. It is best to wait until you have finished having children before proceeding with Mommy Makeover surgeries. Additionally, you will need to be in good health, which will be gone over during your consultation appointment. Since it is comprised of several procedures, each procedure will need to be considered individually to ensure that you are a fit candidate for each procedure.

While the name of the procedures included in the makeover makes it sound like it is limited to mothers, the procedures can be performed on other women as well. If you have the same physical concerns as new mothers, such as sagging breasts or loose skin in the abdomen, these procedures might still be a good choice for you to reach your goals.

Each Mommy Makeover is built around a patient’s individual needs. Some of the procedures that can be selected for a Mommy Makeover include tummy tucks, liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lifts. Your personal goals might be different than these procedures, however, so you should discuss all of your concerns with Dr. Pirani directly.

Common side effects from Mommy Makeovers include bruising, swelling, and tightness. The side effects will fade over time as you heal. The swelling is usually the most noticeable side effect, so follow all of Dr. Pirani’s post-surgery instructions to make sure that what you are feeling is normal.

Most mothers will take off between 1 to 3 weeks to recover from their surgeries, depending on the procedures involved. Most patients are cleared to go back to work 2 to 3 weeks following the procedures. The length of your recovery depends on the type of procedures and the amount of procedures that you have done. You will still need to take it easy and not workout vigorously for 6 weeks following surgery. Walking is ok and recommended, but nothing intense or fast-paced.

As most of the women who receive this procedure are caring for children, a common concern is when it will be possible to return to this task. There is no simple answer to this question. Patients are normally cleared to return to work 2 to 3 weeks after the makeover, but instructed to not exercise, including heavy lifting, for up to 6 weeks. So if you have children that you pick up often and you are home alone with them, you will need extra help for at least a week. You should be able to lift a small child, but do it from the seated position, rather than bending over to lift.

Dr. Pirani will try to ensure that any scars are placed in areas that are easily concealable or simply not in places that can be seen. Scars can take up to 18 months to heal entirely. In the meantime, if you are wearing anything that reveals a scar, make sure that you are covering it in quality sunscreen.

Unfortunately, the final results of your Mommy Makeover will not be known for several weeks following the procedures. Because of swelling and healing time, it can be difficult to gauge how your body will look once it has completely healed. In the case of breast augmentations, you will be able to immediately tell that a change has happened, but you will not be able to see what your final breast appearance will be until you have completely healed.

What To Expect During Your Mommy Makeover Recovery

Reclaiming your body after going through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding experiences a mother can have. One of the ways to do this is through a mommy makeover, where you can return your body to the appearance you had prior to having children.

But one of the things that hold many mothers back from going through a mommy makeover is the recovery. Busy moms really can’t afford to be down for much time and need to be on their feet as quickly as possible. This is what the recovery will be like.

When to Have a Mommy Makeover

If you are considering whether a mommy makeover would be the right choice for you, you will need to be sure that you are ready for one. If you are going to have more children, you will need to wait until you are completely done having children before going through the process of returning your body to its pre-baby shape.

Additionally, you will need to wait until you are completely done breastfeeding before you begin the process of having a makeover. This is because the shape of your breasts, as well as your appetite and even your body shape can be affected while you are breastfeeding. Not to mention, the hormonal changes that your body goes through can affect how your body looks.

Types of Surgeries

A mommy makeover will be different for each person, depending on what your needs are. These are some of the common surgeries that are performed.

  • Breast lift: A breast lift is often performed after you have finished breastfeeding your last child. It can be done at the same time as a breast augmentation or reduction. The breasts often lose elasticity and sag following pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Breast augmentation: Just like with a breast lift, there is a lot of fat lost during the process of child rearing. Getting an augmentation can help fill out the loose skin and return your youthful look.
  • Tummy tuck: Considering the amount of stretching and reduction your stomach goes through when carrying a baby, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there is often excess skin. A tummy tuck will remove excess skin to leave you a tighter body shape.
  • Target fat reduction: A mommy makeover can also reduce specific fat areas in a non-invasive procedure or a more involved procedure. The fat can be removed and leave you with the body shape that you want.

Time for Recovery

The amount of time that it takes to recover from a procedure varies from person to person. This is because it will depend on which procedure and how many procedures that you have done at once. Each procedure will add onto the length of time that it takes to recover. Everyone heals at different speeds, so take that into account as well.

Normally, if you got a breast lift and a tummy tuck, you can expect that you will have bruising and swelling for the first two weeks following the procedures. This is where you will need the most outside help if you still have young children who require your care and attention.

After three weeks, you will have an easier time moving around and the bruises should be gone. You might still experience some swelling at this point, but should be able to return to much of your regular routine.

The final stage of recovery is much easier to manage, but it will take the longest. Your swelling and bruising should all be gone, but you will still want to watch for complications. During this phase of recovery, you will be able to see the real results of the procedures. But it still can take up to a year for a tummy tuck’s results to take full effect.
