An otoplasty (ear pinning) is a procedure designed to address large or protruding ears and ear asymmetry. Large or protruding ears can be the source of significant teasing and embarrassment. Many people use long hair to camouflage large or protruding ears.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty Surgery?

If you are an individual with any of the following concerns, then you may be a candidate for otoplasty surgery:

• Protruding ears
• Large ears
• Asymmetrical ears

Smokers should quit smoking for at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to surgery. Patients should not take any medications that make them prone to bleeding such as aspirin.

How is an Otoplasty Performed?

Dr. Pirani uses an innovative technique to hide your incisions behind the ears. This incision is used to access your ear cartilage and reshape it in order to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and position. In addition to reshaping your ear cartilage, Dr. Pirani will also use internal sutures to help maintain your ears in an ideal position.

Recovery after Otoplasty Surgery

It is normal to expect several weeks of swelling after your otoplasty. Generally, people can go back to work within a few days. Normally there will be some bruising present for anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks after your surgery (everyone heals at different rates).

After otoplasty surgery most patients will continue to notice improvements in their ear shape and position even up to one year after the surgery. Most postoperative swelling usually resolves within 2-6 weeks. Some subtle swelling may last several months, but this is usually only noticeable to you and your surgeon. Dr. Pirani suggests you wear a head band for several weeks after your surgery to help your ears heal in their new positions and also protect them from accidental trauma during the healing period.
