Introduction

In recent years, Toronto plastic surgeons have started to pay more attention to cosmetic rejuvenation of the hands. Recent studies have shown that women, in particular, are quite self-conscious about the appearance of their hands.

After the face, the hands are one of the first things we notice when we meet another individual. Unfortunately, the hands are also one of the first areas to show signs of aging due to sun exposure, the elements, and the natural aging process.

Who is a Candidate for Hand Rejuvenation?

How is Hand Rejuvenation Performed?

In individuals who have noticed a loss of soft tissue fullness in their hands, replacement of this soft tissue will help restore a more youthful appearance. This loss of fat occurs naturally as we age. It results in a markedly bony appearance to our hands, and also makes tendons and veins more noticeable and prominent.

Dr. Pirani uses a number of techniques and modalities to address your specific issues. In addition to removing skin lesions associated with the aging process, Dr. Pirani also uses soft tissue fillers and micro fat grafting techniques to restore a youthful appearance to your hands.

Micro fat grafting or structural fat grafting refers to harvesting fat from an area such as your abdomen to restore volume to your hands. Fat can be harvested from several different areas depending on your preference, such as the flanks, thighs, or love handle areas. The harvested fat is removed using tiny incisions hidden in natural crease lines. Relatively small amounts of fat are usually required for hand rejuvenation. The harvested fat is then purified to maximize its survival potential and your cosmetic result. At this time the purified fat is injected into the back of your hand using several tiny puncture sites. These tiny puncture sites are usually imperceptible once they have healed completely.

Several fat grafting sessions may be required in order to achieve optimal results. The injected fat restores lost volume and helps reduce the visibility of prominent tendons and veins.

Similar results can be obtained with commercial soft tissue fillers, although the results of these treatments are not permanent.

Recovery After Hand Rejuvenation

There will be some swelling present for several weeks after your procedure. Some patients may also notice some bruising for a few weeks after the procedure.

Most patients feel well enough to go back to work within a few days. Dr. Pirani will see you regularly after your surgery to ensure that you are healing well and progressing well.

Depending on how much fat is available to harvest and how much fat is required to restore fulness to your hands, several fat grating sessions may be required to achieve your ideal cosmetic result.

The Consultation

There is a large amount of information to review during a hand rejuvenation consultation. Your initial consultation with Dr. Pirani will take about an hour while he discusses all of the surgical options relevant to you. Dr. Pirani will then create a custom surgical plan for you. He will go over risks and complications and give you an idea of what you should expect in terms of results and recovery.
