What is lip augmentation?

lip augmentation

While the name can be scary to some people, lip augmentation is a fairly simple cosmetic procedure that is most commonly achieved through having dermal filler injected into the lips to give them a fuller appearance.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal filler is used during lip augmentation by injecting it into the lips. There are a variety of different types of fillers for use around the mouth, but the type most commonly used is a hyaluronic acid which is a substance naturally occurring in the body. In the past, collagen was used, but has since been replaced with newer and safer options with better results.

Who is a candidate for lip augmentation?

If you are missing the plump lips of your youth, are unhappy with the shape of your lips, or even have uneven lips, lip augmentation will help you to be happy and confident again. If you want natural looking lips or lips that are more luscious in appearance, you will likely find that lip fillers can help you to achieve this goal.

What are some side effects I may experience?

Because this is a relatively non-invasive procedure, the most common side effects are minor and minimal. Typically, the risks include bruising, redness and swelling following an injection. For the most part, you should be able to return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure, but you may experience tenderness for a few days. As for exercise, take a day off from your routine the day you undergo the procedure.

What happens during an appointment?

During your appointment, we’ll offer a consult so we can discuss what your goals are. We will determine the shape and volume of the lips. Prior to the injection, we will apply a topical or inject a local anesthetic to the lips. The filler is then injected into the lips over the course of just a few minutes, and for most people it feels like a simple pinch or a sting. After the injection, the lips are shaped and the appointment is done! It is quick and easy.

When will I see results?

You’ll see results almost immediately following the injection, but if your lips swell, give it about a day for them to settle into what they will look like.

How long can I expect the fillers to last?

Typically, injections last three to six months, depending on the type used, and on your particular body. Some people metabolize at a faster rate, which results in shorter term results. Your lips will return to their normal shape after you stop receiving regular injections.
