Belkyra & Kybella

 In Facelift

Have you heard of the injection that can melt away fat from under your chin without surgery? What could it be, and is it safe? What’s the difference between Belkyra and Kybella? Here’s what you need to know. “Belkyra” and “Kybella” are actually the same thing.

They are just two different trademarks for a naturally occurring substance called deoxycholic acid. It works by dissolving fat cell membranes, allowing the fat to pass through our bodies and be eliminated. The substance has been approved by Health Canada and the FDA, so you can be sure that it is absolutely safe.

Who can benefit from deoxycholic acid treatments?

If you have a double chin, this could be the answer you are looking for. Ideally, you are not particularly overweight, but for genetic or other reasons, the double chin just won’t go away. You can shave years off your appearance and immediately look slimmer just by getting rid of the unwanted fat under your chin.

What is the process like?

Belkyra & Kybella

First, you will consult a cosmetic surgeon to determine whether Belkyra can help you. If you are approved as a good candidate for the treatment, you need to do a little preparation. Limit or cut out alcohol for at least a week before the procedure, and stop taking any anti-inflammatory medications. These two steps will help you to recover faster after your treatment.

When you come for your treatment, you will be given a topical aesthetic so that you hardly feel the injections. A see-through grid is placed under your chin to help your cosmetic practitioner determine where each injection should go. This helps to get even results. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes, and you can return to work or resume your regular activities right away.

Some people will need more than one treatment to achieve the desired results. While some people may only need one treatment, others will require anything from two to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.

Are there side-effects?

Most people experience some degree of redness, swelling and bruising after the treatment. Some people find that the area feels numb for up to two months. None of these side-effects are dangerous. If you are concerned about the look of bruises, inflammation or swelling, have your procedure done on a Friday. By Monday, you should look more like you usually do. Meanwhile, the fat under your chin is literally melting away.

How does it compare to liposuction?

Liposuction produces instant results whereas Belkyra or Kybella takes anything from a few days to a few weeks before you see the difference. However, the recovery after liposuction is longer, and you will need to wear a compression bandage for quite some time. As a result, most patients prefer Belkyra and Kybella to liposuction when it comes to dealing with a double chin.

However, none of these treatments will work well for you if you have a lot of loose skin under the chin. In this case, a neck lift would be the preferable procedure.
