4 Things to Expect After Facelift Surgery

 In Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

People begin to show signs of aging in their 40s and 50s. Their faces tend to sag, wrinkles appear and their expressions often betray their actual emotions, making them seem rather unhappy. As a result many turn to cosmetic procedures such as the facelift. This procedure should be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Depending on what is required, procedures may be performed on the neck as well. But there are certain things you should expect after undergoing a facelift, such as possible side effects as well as a restriction of activities.

Facelift Surgery

Bruising and Swelling
As a result of the incisions performed, bruising and swelling is a natural occurrence after surgery. This could last a few days or a couple weeks. To minimize this the patient normally wears loosely tied bandages and takes pain medication. The surgeon may insert a drainage tube behind your ear to prevent the collection of blood and fluid under the skin. Generally you will experience swelling, numbness and skin discoloration. Your face will also feel a bit tender. This is normal.

Posture and Physical Activity
Patients are usually expected to avoid all rigorous activity and remain at home as much as possible for the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. When lying down your head should be kept elevated to minimize swelling. Sleep with two pillows if need be. Also you should avoid getting any of the incisions wet. Avoid certain places like steam rooms and saunas. You should also abstain from alcohol.

Post-surgery visit
You will likely have a visit with your doctor the day after surgery. The surgeon may replace the bandages and apply ointment to your skin. He/she will also check for any ingrown hair in your incisions as they can cause infection and inflammation. Any sutures or staples are removed within five to ten days after surgery.

You should report anything unusual to your doctor after the surgery. Some of these things may include: irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain and pain in your neck or face after surgery (usually within 12 hours).

Family Support
It is best to get a family member or friend to drive you home after surgery. Also it is good to talk to them about the surgery and what to expect. Keep in mind that your initial appearance immediately after surgery will gradually gave way to your desired look.
