Returning To Exercise After Breast Augmentation
It is understandable that you will want to return to your regular workout routine following a breast augmentation surgery. While you might want to jump right back in, you will need to pace yourself and ensure that you will not injure yourself in the process. This is what you need to know before you return to your exercise routine following a breast augmentation procedure.
Immediately after Surgery
You should begin exercising immediately after surgery. By exercise, we mean nothing strenuous, but instead just taking short walks around the house every two hours or so. The goal of this is to help keep your circulation up in order to promote healing and prevent blood clots. You do not want a full cardio workout, just do not sit or lay around all day.
Two Weeks after Surgery
When it has been two weeks after surgery, you can try to do some cardio workouts. You can try walking at a faster pace on a treadmill or try walking on hilly surfaces. You can get your heart rate up, but don’t overdo it or you will find yourself sore.
One Month after Surgery
At a month post operatively, you can resume the majority of your regular exercise routines, with the exception of heavy lifting. You should not lift weights or lift anything around the house that is heavy or you could put strain on your incisions. You should also avoid doing pushups specifically since many implants are placed below the muscle. The pushup motion can place stress on your breasts, leading to further injury and delaying your recovery time.
Six Weeks after Surgery
At this point you should be healed well enough to completely return to all of your regular exercise routines, including heavy lifting and intense cardio exercises.
The most important thing to remember is to listen to your body. If a movement or exercise hurts or is causing swelling, stop what you are doing and you can try it again in a couple of weeks when your body has had an opportunity to heal a little better.
Major Concerns
The major concerns for exercising after a breast augmentation surgery is to ensure that you are healing well and as painlessly as possible. You should not overuse your pectoral muscles because most breast implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscles. The pocket that holds the implant starts forming following surgery and is comprised of scar tissue. The pocket is formed naturally and should be allowed to form and heal undisturbed to give you the best outcome from your breast augmentation.
What this means is do not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds, do not do pullups, pushups, yoga, Pilates, and even sports like golf and tennis. The elliptical trainer also needs to be off-limits during the healing process, allowing the muscles to recover and accept the implants.
Instead, aim for lower body workouts, including the stationary bike, walking, squats, and lunges.
Bottom Line
Allow your body the time it needs to heal and accept the new implants. Then you will have the best outcome possible.
