About the Treatment
- How does this procedure work?
Plump lips are a sign of health and beauty, and as age takes its toll on our bodies, our lips get affected as well. Lip augmentation involves the use of lip injections containing hyaluronic acid to make your lips look fuller, younger, and healthier.
The gel in the lip fillers helps provide support and shape to your lip tissue. Lip injections also help to smooth out wrinkles and laugh lines that form around the lip area. In many patients, the upper lip will extend from the base of the nose and will account for about one-third of your total lips, with the bottom lip taking up the remaining two-thirds. Adding filler to the thinner lip will give you a completely natural look, as your body is able to use the injected hyaluronic acid naturally.
The most important step in the lip augmentation process is choosing the right doctor. Dr. Pirani is the doctor of choice for so many patients because his years of experience and continuous education ensure you get the best possible results
- Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
If you are concerned about deep lines around your mouth and around the corners of your lips, poor lip definition, or small or deflated lips, then you may be a candidate for lip injections.
- Which lip filler is the right one for me?
A common misconception is that all lip fillers are exactly the same. Even though they share hyaluronic acid as a main ingredient, different brands serve different purposes. When it comes to your lips, you need to make sure that you get it right the first time.
Dr. Pirani uses many types of fillers but prefers Restylane fillers in most patients due to their long track record of safety and efficacy. For most patients, Dr. Pirani will use Restylane Refyne™ as the primary lip filler. This filler feels soft and smooth and is ideal for natural plumpness. For patients that require shaping and definition, he will use Restylane Defyne™. This filler is more firm and ideal for shaping the lips. In patients that need both shaping and plumping, he will either use both fillers or Restylane Kysse™.
Dr. Pirani can help determine which filler is ideal for your situation.
- How much do lip fillers cost?
The price for lip fillers varies depending on the type of filler that you are receiving, as well as how much filler you need in order to achieve the look you are hoping for. Dr. Pirani will be able to go over your specific costs with you at your consultation.
The lip fillers themselves cost $750 for each syringe. The number of syringes you will need depends on your goals for size and shape. Dr. Pirani only injects one syringe into the lips at most per session. It is best to wait one month between injections to avoid complications such as filler migration.
- Who will perform the procedure?
Dr. Pirani administers all lip injections himself to maintain quality control. No nurses or assistants perform the lip injections at the Toronto Plastic Surgery Center. When you make an appointment with Dr. Pirani, you get Dr. Pirani.
- How long does the procedure take?
One of the best things about receiving lip injections is that the procedure itself is relatively quick. In some cases, it can take as little as 15 to 20 minutes, making it possible to have it done on a lunch break. It is best to arrive early to your appointment so we can apply topical numbing agents prior to your procedure.
- Are there side effects?
Although all medical procedures carry risks, lip injections with dermal fillers are usually very well tolerated. Lips tend to swell so you should expect at least a few days of swelling and bruising. You will be provided with post-procedure instructions to follow. Following these instructions will help minimize any post-procedure issues.
- How long will the results last?
How long the results last depends entirely on your body and how it metabolizes the filler. As the filler is made of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance found naturally in our bodies, the filler will be broken down naturally by enzymes already in your tissues. For most people, lip filler should last six to 12 months.
If you regularly get lip injections, your lips may retain the volume and shape for longer.
- What can I do to prepare for my procedure?
Before your lip injection appointment, there are some things that you should pay attention to:
- Avoid blood thinning and anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
- Increase your intake of dark leafy greens to help boost your vitamin K level.
- Plan to take the rest of the day off from work if you are worried about swelling.
- Have an ice pack ready in your freezer.
- Eat something before the procedure. Your lips will likely be numb after and it is dangerous to try to eat/drink hot or cold items when your lips are numb.
- Are the results permanent?
When it comes to lip fillers, the results will not be permanent. Because the filler is made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance, your body will eventually metabolize it.
- When will I see results?
A big difference between BOTOX® and fillers is the amount of time it takes to see results. Since lip fillers are placed under the skin, filling in space, you will be able to see some results immediately.
Immediately after the procedure and for several days, you can expect to see some swelling of the lips. Because of this, it will be hard to determine exactly what your final results will look like until the swelling goes down. It can take up to two weeks for all the swelling to subside. Only then will you be able to see what your results truly are.
- Can men get lip injections?
Men can absolutely get lip injections. Lip injections are available for everyone, regardless of gender. Men, like women, can suffer from thin lips as well as fine lines and wrinkles around the lips. Lip filler can help fill out thin lips as well as remove the appearance of lines around the lips, giving you a more desirable appearance.
- Does lip augmentation hurt?
Dr. Pirani uses a unique and highly effective topical anaesthetic to reduce the pain associated with lip augmentation. In addition, the Restylane fillers he uses have lidocaine in them so they further numb the lips as they are injected. Dr. Pirani also uses extremely small needles to administer the filler. Through the combination of these measures, Dr. Pirani’s patients generally find lip augmentation to be quite comfortable.
You may experience some bruising, swelling, and redness after your lip injections, but these are usually short lived. You are advised to not massage the injected areas and to allow the filler to settle in well.
Apart from following your doctor’s post-treatment advice, there is no additional downtime. You can go straight back to work or home. You do have to take certain precautions after your lip injections to avoid bruising later. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications and strenuous exercise for at least one to two days. Dr. Pirani will advise you after your lip injections are administered so that you walk away looking naturally young and healthy.
Even though the procedure is short, depending on your line of work, you might not want to go back to work immediately afterwards. You should expect some swelling and bruising for at least the first few days following your lip injections. Do not get injections right before a wedding or major life event.
For a lip augmentation consultation, Dr. Pirani will spend approximately 30 minutes going over all of your options, after which he will create a custom treatment plan that addresses all of your concerns and goals. He will go over risks and possible complications and give you an idea of what you should expect in terms of results and recovery.
Although this initial consultation is quite thorough, the procedure itself is relatively quick, and many patients come in for lip augmentation treatments during their lunch breaks to maximize efficiency. Dr. Pirani’s goal is to educate you so that you feel confident and informed, and he and the Toronto Plastic Surgery Center team will do everything possible to accommodate your schedule.
